PostgreSQL® development

A reliable database for the records your business runs on: orders, payments, bookings and stock, kept accurate and easy to report on.

How we use it

PostgreSQL is our default database for orders, payments, bookings, inventory and accounts, and its extensions often remove the need for separate search, geospatial or vector systems.

What PostgreSQL is, and why it is our default database

PostgreSQL is a free, open-source database: the place where your app keeps its records. It stores information in linked tables, so every order knows its customer, items and payment. For you, that means records that stay consistent even when something fails halfway, and reports your accountant can trust.

Business data is relational: customers have orders, orders have items and payments, payments have refunds. PostgreSQL enforces those relationships with constraints and transactions, so a failed step rolls back cleanly instead of leaving a half-recorded payment. We usually run it on a managed service such as Amazon RDS or Aurora in an Indian region.

Use cases

What we build and store with PostgreSQL

  • Orders, payments and ledgers

Transactional records with constraints and audit history.

  • Location queries

Nearest store, delivery zones and service areas with PostGIS.

  • Catalogue and help-centre search

Weighted full-text search without a separate engine.

  • AI features

Embeddings in pgvector next to the data they describe.

  • Multi-tenant SaaS

    Tenant isolation with row-level security.

Why PostgreSQL matters for your business data

  • Records that stay consistent

ACID transactions keep data correct even when a request fails midway.

  • Room for flexible details

JSONB stores varied product attributes without giving up relational design.

  • One database, many jobs

Extensions add location queries, full-text search and AI search, so you run and pay for fewer systems.

  • Well-supported hosting

Backups, replication and managed hosting are available on every major cloud.

Comparison

PostgreSQL or MongoDB?

PostgreSQL or MongoDB?
PostgreSQLMongoDB
Data modelTables with relationships and constraintsFlexible JSON-like documents
Multi-record transactionsA core strengthSupported, used more sparingly
Reporting and joinsStraightforward with SQLAggregation pipelines; joins are limited
Good fitOrders, payments, bookings, accountsVariable content, event logs, prototypes

When we would not recommend PostgreSQL

  • Data that changes shape constantly: content blocks, event logs or very varied records can fit a document database such as MongoDB more naturally.
  • Extreme write volumes from day one: very high write volumes eventually call for partitioning or read replicas, so we plan for that or use a specialised store for that one job.
  • No one to look after it: schema changes need disciplined migrations, and connection limits require pooling in serverless setups, so it needs a team that will manage both.

Plain-English glossary

Database terms, in plain English

Relational database
A database that keeps information in tables linked to each other, like customers, orders and payments. The links make reports and totals straightforward and accurate.
Transaction
A group of changes saved all together or not at all. If a payment step fails, the order is not left half-saved, which keeps your books correct.
Index
A lookup list the database keeps so it can find records quickly, like the index at the back of a book. The right indexes turn slow screens into fast ones.
Read replica
A live copy of the database used for heavy reports, so month-end reporting does not slow down customers placing orders.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Our PostgreSQL queries are getting slow. Can you help?

Yes. We read the slow query log and execution plans to find the queries that cost the most, then fix them with the right indexes, query rewrites or schema changes. Common culprits are missing indexes on foreign keys, N+1 queries from an ORM and heavy reports running on the primary database. We measure before and after and add monitoring.

Can PostgreSQL replace a separate vector database for AI search?

Often, yes. With pgvector, embeddings sit next to the records they describe, so one query can filter by tenant, category or permission and rank by similarity. That keeps access control in one place and avoids syncing two systems. For very large collections or specialised search needs, a dedicated vector database may perform better, and we will say so.

How do you migrate from MySQL or another database to PostgreSQL?

We map the schema and data types, convert stored procedures and application queries, and rehearse the migration on a copy of production data to measure timing and catch issues. For minimal downtime, changes can replicate continuously until a short switch-over window. Row counts and checksums confirm the data matches before the old system is retired.
