Building software for healthcare in India

Healthcare software is judged differently from other apps. A patient may use it while anxious or unwell, on a shared phone, in a language other than English. Clinicians have seconds, not minutes, to find what matters. And the data involved, from diagnoses to prescriptions and reports, is among the most sensitive a business can hold.

India adds its own context: the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission for interoperable records, the Telemedicine Practice Guidelines for remote consultation, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 for consent and data rights, and patients spread across metros and small towns.

We build patient apps, provider tools and telemedicine, pharmacy and diagnostics platforms with these considerations in the architecture from the first sprint, not added just before launch.

Challenges

What makes healthcare products hard to get right

  1. Sensitive data by default

Health information needs consent, access control, audit trails and careful retention.

  2. Fragmented records

Patients carry paper files between providers, and systems rarely talk to each other.

  3. Very different users

Elderly patients, caregivers and busy doctors need very different interfaces.

  4. Regulatory context

Teleconsultation, e-prescriptions and online medicine sales each carry specific rules.

Capabilities across the care journey

  • Interoperability

ABDM integration with ABHA linking, and FHIR-based data exchange where partners support it.

  • Multilingual, accessible UX

Regional languages, larger text options and flows tested with older users.

  • Remote care

Video, audio and chat consultations with e-prescriptions and follow-up scheduling.

  • Personal health records

Reports, prescriptions and vitals stored and shared by the patient.

Privacy & security

How we handle health data

  • Consent records

Purpose-specific consent captured, versioned and revocable by the patient.

  • Role-based access and audit logs

Staff see only what their role needs, and every record view is logged.

  • Encryption and Indian hosting

Data encrypted in transit and at rest, hosted in Indian cloud regions where required.

  • AI with human review

AI assists staff with summaries or routing; clinical judgement stays with clinicians.

How it works

How a digital care journey works, end to end

Consent and records travel with the patient at every step, not just the appointment.

  1. Patient app

    Step 1: Patient books care

An in-person visit or video consultation, booked in their own language on a shared or budget phone.

  2. Clinic or platform

Step 2: Provider confirms and records consent

Purpose-specific consent is captured before any health data is shared, and the patient can withdraw it later.

  3. Doctor

    Step 3: Consultation

In person or by video, with past reports the patient chose to share already on screen.

  4. Doctor

Step 4: Prescription and next steps

A structured e-prescription reaches the patient and, if they choose, a pharmacy or lab of their choice.

  5. ABDM integration

Step 5: Records linked to ABHA

Reports and prescriptions can be linked to the patient's ABHA and shared with other providers, with consent.

  6. Care team

    Step 6: Follow-up and reminders

Medicine reminders, test bookings and follow-up visits keep the journey going after the consultation ends.

Plain-English glossary

Healthcare technology terms, in plain English

ABDM
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, India's framework for connecting health records across providers. Integrating with it lets patients carry their records between hospitals, labs and apps, with consent.
FHIR
A widely used international standard for structuring health records so different systems can read them. ABDM uses FHIR-based formats, so building on it avoids custom translations for every partner.
DPDP Act
The Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023. For health products it shapes consent screens, data minimisation, deletion requests and breach response, all of which are easier to build in from the start than to add later.
Telemedicine Practice Guidelines
The 2020 rules for remote consultations in India, covering doctor registration, patient identification, consent and what can be prescribed remotely. Good telehealth software turns them into steps in the flow.
Role-based access
Each staff member sees only what their role needs; reception sees appointments but not clinical notes, for example. Together with audit logs, it is the backbone of handling health data responsibly.

Screens for patients, doctors and care administrators

Illustrative screens: consent, language and accessibility choices are designed with your clinical team.

  • Healthcare software patient app booking slots on a phone
Patient app. Patients book video or in-person care in their preferred language, with larger text for older users and a way for caregivers to book on their behalf.
  • Healthcare software video consultation on a phone, with call controls
Video consultation. Video consultations fall back to audio on weak networks, and a family caregiver can join the call with the patient's permission.
  • Healthcare software doctor's day dr. K. iyer on a tablet, with 4 entries
Doctor's day. Doctors see their day with each patient's consent status and shared reports, so consultation time goes on care rather than paperwork.
  • Healthcare software care admin dashboard in a web browser, with key figures and a chart
Care admin dashboard. Administrators see consultations, ABHA linking and consent requests in one view, which also gives compliance reviewers an audit trail to check.

Cost drivers

Cost drivers in healthcare software

  1. Compliance-driven engineering

Consent management, audit logs, encryption and retention rules add work beyond visible features.

  2. Integrations

ABDM, labs, pharmacies, payment gateways, insurers and existing hospital systems each need building and testing.

  3. Clinical workflow design

Time with doctors and staff to design workflows is essential and part of the budget.

  4. Security testing

An independent penetration test before launch is strongly advised for health products.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do healthcare apps in India need to integrate with ABDM?

It isn't mandatory for every product, but it is increasingly relevant. If your platform creates or holds health records such as consultations, lab reports or prescriptions, ABDM integration lets patients link those records to their ABHA and share them with other providers, with consent. For appointment-only or general wellness products it may be optional. We help you decide based on your product, partners and roadmap.

How do you approach the DPDP Act for health data?

We treat the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 as a design input from the start: collecting only the data the product needs, recording purpose-specific consent, letting users view, correct and erase their data, and protecting it with encryption, access controls and audit logs. We also plan breach detection and response. This is engineering practice, not legal advice; your counsel should review consent text, policies and processor agreements.

Can AI be used safely in a healthcare product?

It can, in carefully bounded roles: summarising documents for staff, structuring notes, answering questions from verified content or routing enquiries. We avoid positioning AI as a diagnostic tool, keep a clinician or trained staff member in the loop for anything clinical, log outputs for review and restrict what data reaches third-party models. Where sensitivity is high, self-hosted or de-identified approaches are worth considering.

Will you sign an NDA and a data processing agreement?

Yes. We sign NDAs before discussing product details, and for products that process patient data we agree a data processing agreement covering how our team accesses data during development and support. In practice we develop with synthetic or de-identified data, limit production access to named engineers and log that access. Your legal team can review our standard terms or propose their own.
