Firebase development

Ready-made building blocks for mobile apps, such as push notifications, phone OTP login and crash reports, so you launch sooner.

How we use it

Firebase provides ready-made building blocks for mobile and web apps. We use its messaging, crash reporting and sign-in tools in many projects, and for some MVPs it replaces a custom back end entirely.

What Firebase is, and how we use its building blocks

Firebase is a set of ready-made cloud services for mobile and web apps: sign-in by phone OTP, push notifications, crash reports, file storage and a live database. Instead of building these from scratch, we switch on the pieces your app needs. For you, that means a faster first release and early warning when the app crashes on a customer's phone.

For MVPs with simple data, Firebase can shorten the path to a first release: authentication, a real-time database, file storage and hosting are ready to use. Its notification, crash reporting and remote configuration tools are useful in almost every mobile app, even one with a custom back end.

Use cases

What we build with Firebase

  • Push notifications

Order updates, reminders and campaigns through Cloud Messaging.

  • Phone OTP sign-in

Firebase Authentication with App Check against abuse.

  • Crash and stability reporting

Crashlytics alerts with device and OS details.

  • Feature flags and staged rollouts

Remote Config to switch features without a release.

  • MVP back ends

Firestore, Storage and Cloud Functions for early products.

Why Firebase matters for a new app

  • Fast start

Managed services with SDKs for Flutter, Android, iOS and web cut weeks from a first release.

  • Live updates

Real-time sync pushes changes to connected apps instantly.

  • Low cost at small scale

Free usage tiers suit early products.

  • Everything in one console

Analytics, test distribution and monitoring sit together.

When we would not recommend Firebase as your back end

  • Complex business rules and reporting: Firestore's query model makes complex reporting awkward, so products with payments, several user roles or heavy reports suit a custom API with PostgreSQL.
  • Busy apps without careful data design: per-read pricing can climb with poorly designed screens, and moving off it later takes planning.
  • Niche features you cannot lose: Google has retired Firebase products before, such as Dynamic Links, so we avoid depending on niche features.

Plain-English glossary

Firebase terms, in plain English

Push notification
A message that appears on the phone's lock screen, such as 'Your order is out for delivery'. Firebase Cloud Messaging delivers them to Android and iOS.
Crash reporting
Automatic reports sent when the app crashes on someone's phone, with the device and OS version, so problems are found and fixed before most users complain.
Remote Config
Settings the team can change from a dashboard without releasing a new app version, such as switching a feature on for a small group of users first.
Firestore
Firebase's live cloud database. It is quick to start with, but its pricing and query style suit simple data better than complex reporting.

Services

Services that use Firebase

  • Mobile app development

Native and cross-platform Android and iOS apps, from first release through regular store updates, built by our in-house designers and engineers.

  • Flutter development

Android and iOS apps from one Dart codebase, built by engineers who know when Flutter is the right call and when native code is needed.

  • Android app development

Native Android apps in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, designed for entry-level phones, patchy networks and the background limits of popular Android brands.

  • iOS app development

Native iPhone and iPad apps in Swift and SwiftUI, built to Apple's review guidelines and privacy rules and tested on the devices your customers use.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should our app's back end be Firebase or a custom API?

Firebase suits MVPs with straightforward data, small teams and a need to launch quickly. A custom API with PostgreSQL suits products with complex business rules, payments, reporting, several user roles or integrations with other systems. Many apps combine both: a custom back end for core data, with Firebase for notifications, crash reporting and remote configuration.

Is Firebase phone authentication suitable for Indian users?

It works in India and is quick to add, but each verification SMS is billed, and OTP flows attract abuse from fake sign-ups. We enable App Check, add rate limits and watch for unusual patterns. At higher volumes, some products move to an Indian SMS or WhatsApp OTP provider through their own back end to control cost and delivery rates.

Can we migrate away from Firestore later?

Yes, with planning. We export collections, transform documents into the new schema, backfill a new database and switch the app over, often through a new API version, while older app versions still in use keep working. Designing Firestore data with clear, consistent structures from the start makes any later migration much easier.
