Why D2C brands outgrow off-the-shelf setups

A D2C brand's advantage is its direct relationship with customers. That advantage erodes when every function lives in a different plugin: reviews in one, subscriptions in another, WhatsApp messaging in a third, none sharing data cleanly.

We help brands keep the storefront they have where it works, and build the pieces that make them distinct: subscription and refill flows, bundles, landing pages that load quickly from paid social traffic, and a customer data layer the marketing team can actually use.

Challenges

Growth problems specific to D2C

  1. Rising acquisition costs

Repeat purchases matter more each quarter, yet retention tooling is bolted on.

  2. Plugin sprawl

Dozens of apps slow the store and create conflicting customer records.

  3. COD-heavy first orders

New customers default to cash on delivery, pushing up RTO on unproven buyers.

  4. Consent obligations

WhatsApp and SMS marketing needs recorded opt-ins, which the DPDP Act 2023 makes harder to ignore.

Built for channels you own

  • Subscribe-and-save

Recurring orders on UPI AutoPay or card mandates, with skip and pause controls.

  • WhatsApp commerce journeys

Cart reminders, order updates and reorder links through the WhatsApp Business Platform.

  • Bundles and gifting

Build-your-own kits, gift notes and festive hampers with correct stock deduction.

  • Unified customer profiles

Orders, subscriptions, tickets and consents in one record.

  • Campaign landing pages

Fast pages for influencer and ad campaigns, with coupon attribution.

How it works

How a D2C shopper goes from first order to regular

Owning the channel means every step feeds the same customer record.

  1. Landing page

Step 1: Shopper lands from a campaign

An influencer or ad link opens a fast page with the coupon already applied, so the source of the sale is recorded from the first click.

  2. Storefront

Step 2: First order, with consent recorded

Checkout records separate opt-ins for WhatsApp, SMS and email, with the time and source of each, as the DPDP Act expects.

  3. WhatsApp messages

Step 3: Order updates on WhatsApp

Confirmation, dispatch and delivery updates go out automatically, followed by a reorder link when the product is likely to run low.

  4. Customer

Step 4: Customer subscribes and saves

They approve a UPI AutoPay mandate for refills and can skip or pause from a link, without raising a support ticket.

  5. Growth team

Step 5: Growth team sees one profile

Orders, subscriptions, tickets and consents sit in one record, so segments come from your own data rather than plugin exports.

Then it starts again at step 1: Shopper lands from a campaign

Plain-English glossary

D2C terms, in plain English

UPI AutoPay
A recurring payment mandate the customer approves once in their UPI app. Each refill is then charged automatically within the limit they agreed, with a notice before every debit.
First-party data
Information customers give your brand directly through orders, subscriptions and support. Unlike data held by marketplaces or ad platforms, you own it and can use it for retention within the consent given.
Coupon attribution
Linking each order to the campaign code or link that produced it. It shows which influencer or ad actually drives repeat sales, so budget moves to what works.
DPDP Act 2023
India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act. For a D2C brand it means recording who opted in to which channel, honouring opt-outs everywhere and deleting data when a customer asks.

What subscribers and your growth team see

  • D2C brand software customer app profile on a phone, with account details
Customer app. Subscribers see the next debit date and amount, and can skip, pause or change quantity themselves, which keeps support tickets and failed renewals down.
  • D2C brand software updates chat on a phone, with a question and a reply
WhatsApp updates. Customers who opted in get order updates and reorder prompts on WhatsApp, and a simple reply can add an item to their next shipment.
  • D2C brand software growth dashboard in a web browser, with key figures and a chart
Growth dashboard. The growth team tracks repeat rate, subscriptions and campaign attribution from first-party data, instead of stitching exports from several plugins.

Cost drivers

What shapes a D2C build budget

  1. Storefront strategy

Extending Shopify is quicker; headless or custom builds cost more but remove plugin limits.

  2. Subscription logic

Mandates, proration, skips and failed-payment retries add meaningful testing effort.

  3. Data integrations

Connecting CRM, analytics, WhatsApp and courier tools determines much of the backend work.

Estimates are written from your scope, with the effort and assumptions behind each line item.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should a D2C brand build a mobile app or stay web-only?

Most brands should start with a fast mobile website or PWA, because first-time buyers rarely install an app. An app starts paying off once you have repeat customers who reorder often, as in consumables, beauty or food, and you want push notifications, saved preferences and quicker reorders. We usually suggest validating repeat behaviour on the web first, then building the app on the same backend so nothing is duplicated.

Can you set up subscriptions with UPI AutoPay?

Yes. UPI AutoPay lets customers approve a recurring mandate in their UPI app, and gateways such as Razorpay and Cashfree support it alongside card mandates. Mandate limits and pre-debit notification rules apply, so we design the flow around them: clear mandate amounts, reminders before each charge, retries for failed debits and easy pause or cancel options, so customers don't need to raise a support ticket.

How do you keep customer data usable for marketing without breaking privacy rules?

We store explicit consent per channel, whether WhatsApp, SMS or email, with the time and source of each opt-in, and make opt-outs take effect everywhere. Segments are built from your own order data, not bought lists. We treat the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 as a design input, including data minimisation and deletion on request, while your legal team confirms policy wording.
