Apps that support care between visits

Most of a patient's health journey happens outside the clinic: taking medicines, recording blood sugar, collecting reports, remembering follow-ups. A good healthcare app makes those tasks easier and gives care teams structured information instead of photos of paper reports on WhatsApp.

Our healthcare app development starts with who the app is for. Elderly diabetes patients need large type, regional language support and a family member who can manage the account. A lab's collection staff need offline job lists and barcode scanning. We design each flow around those users.

Challenges

Why health apps lose their users

  1. Built for the demo, not the patient

Small text, English-only screens and long sign-ups push away older users.

  2. Reports scattered everywhere

WhatsApp PDFs, paper files and lab portals belong in one timeline the patient controls.

  3. Readings nobody acts on

Logged values matter only if care teams see flagged readings with a clear escalation path.

  4. Unclear consent

Patients share more readily when they can see who has access.

How it works

How a care programme works between clinic visits

Clinicians set the targets and make the decisions; the app keeps patients, families and care teams in step.

  1. Patient app

Step 1: Patient signs up with family

The patient or a family member creates the account, adds profiles for parents or children and gives consent for each purpose.

  2. Patient app

    Step 2: Records come together

Past reports are uploaded or pulled in with ABHA consent, forming one timeline instead of photos on WhatsApp.

  3. Patient app and devices

Step 3: Daily readings and reminders

Glucometer, BP monitor or wearable readings sync to the app, and medicine and follow-up reminders arrive on time.

  4. Care team console

Step 4: Care team reviews flags

Readings outside the range set by the clinician appear on a review list; the care team calls the patient or escalates to the doctor.

  5. Patient app

Step 5: Lab test at home

The patient books a home sample collection slot, and the report lands in the same timeline.

  6. Clinic

    Step 6: Follow-up visit

At the next visit, the doctor sees trends since the last consultation instead of relying on memory.

Then it starts again at step 1: Patient signs up with family

Integrations

Health and device integrations

  • Health records

    • ABDM (ABHA, HIP and HIU flows)

ABHA linking and consented record sharing between providers.

  • Wearables

    • Health Connect and Apple HealthKit

Steps, heart rate, sleep and other data the user chooses to share.

  • Devices

    • Bluetooth medical devices

Glucometers and BP monitors with standard health profiles or vendor SDKs.

  • Interoperability

    • HL7 FHIR APIs

Structured exchange with hospital, lab and EMR systems.

  • Messaging

    • WhatsApp Business Platform

Reminders and report-ready alerts without clinical detail.

Privacy & security

How we handle health data

  • Purpose-specific consent

Captured per purpose with a timestamp, designed with the DPDP Act 2023 in mind, and withdrawable in the app.

  • Role-based access and audit trails

Staff see what their role needs, and every view, edit and export of a record is logged.

  • Encryption and Indian hosting

TLS in transit, encryption at rest and Indian cloud regions unless you decide otherwise.

  • No automated diagnosis

Rules or AI flag information for a clinician; they do not diagnose or recommend treatment.

Plain-English glossary

Health app terms, in plain English

Care programme
A structured plan for managing a condition such as diabetes between visits: readings, reminders, check-in calls and reviews by a care team.
Health Connect and HealthKit
The health data hubs on Android phones and iPhones. With the user's permission, the app reads steps, heart rate or sleep from them instead of connecting to each wearable separately.
Purpose-specific consent
Asking permission for each use of health data separately, such as sharing with a doctor versus receiving tips. Patients can see and withdraw each consent in the app.
HIP and HIU in ABDM
In ABDM, a health information provider shares records and a health information user requests them, always with the patient's consent. An app can play either role.
Software as a medical device
Software that diagnoses or guides treatment can be regulated like a medical device in India. We flag such features early so you can take regulatory advice before we build them.

Cost drivers

What drives the cost of a healthcare app

  1. User groups

A patient-only app is smaller than one for patients, caregivers, care teams and administrators.

  2. Existing systems

Connecting to an HMS, lab system or devices often takes more effort than the app screens.

  3. ABDM integration

Sandbox development, testing and an approval step come before production.

  4. Regulatory review

Features that could count as a medical device need advice before build, which affects timelines.

Estimates are written from your scope, with the effort and assumptions behind each line item.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Could a health tracking app need approval as a medical device in India?

It depends on the intended purpose. Apps that store records, book appointments or log readings for the patient are generally viewed differently from software that interprets readings to diagnose or guide treatment. Under the Medical Devices Rules, 2017, software with a medical purpose can fall under CDSCO regulation. We flag features that may cross that line early, so you can take regulatory advice before we build them.

What is ABDM integration, and does our app need it?

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, run by the National Health Authority, lets patients hold an ABHA and share health records between providers with consent. Integration can mean creating or verifying ABHAs, sharing records as a health information provider, or requesting them as a health information user. Not every app needs it. The work goes through ABDM's sandbox and review process before going live.

Can the app read data from wearables and home medical devices?

Yes, with the user's permission for each data type. Android apps use Health Connect and iOS apps use Apple HealthKit, which cover most popular wearables. Glucometers and blood pressure monitors can connect over Bluetooth where they follow standard health profiles or offer an SDK. Some devices only share data through the maker's own app, so we check your target devices before promising an integration.

Can we add AI features such as report summaries?

Carefully. Plain-language summaries of lab reports or discharge notes, clearly labelled and ideally reviewed, can help patients. Tools that suggest diagnoses may bring medical device obligations. We use LLM APIs only under terms that do not retain or train on your data, strip identifiers where possible, and keep a clinician in the loop for anything that affects care.
