React Native for Android and iOS apps

Build Android and iOS apps in the same language as a React website, so one team can share code and skills across web and mobile.

How we use it

React Native builds Android and iOS apps in TypeScript with real native components. We use it with Expo, particularly when a client's web product is already in React.

What React Native is, and where it makes sense

React Native is a toolkit for building Android and iOS apps with JavaScript and TypeScript, the same languages used for React websites. The app still uses each phone's own buttons, menus and gestures, so it feels familiar to users. For you, it means one team can look after the website and the app, and some code is written once for both.

React Native makes most sense when your product already lives in the JavaScript world: validation rules, API clients and types can be shared between the web app, the mobile app and a Node.js back end. We build with Expo and the framework's New Architecture.

Use cases

What we build with React Native

  • Mobile companions to web SaaS

Notifications, approvals and quick actions for existing web products.

  • Marketplace and commerce apps

Buyer and seller apps sharing logic with a React storefront.

  • Content and community apps

Feeds, comments, media upload and moderation.

  • Internal staff apps

Approvals, inspections and task lists linked to existing systems.

  • MVPs for TypeScript teams

Apps your web developers can maintain after launch.

Why React Native matters for your team

  • Shared code with your web product

Types, validation and API clients are reused across web, mobile and server, so rules stay consistent and changes cost less.

  • Feels at home on each phone

Native components give users the controls and accessibility behaviour they expect on Android and iOS.

  • Urgent fixes without waiting

Over-the-air updates ship JavaScript fixes through Expo, within app store policies.

  • Easier hiring

Libraries and developers come from the wider React community.

When we would not recommend React Native

  • A design-heavy app with no React code to share: Flutter is often simpler and gives more control over custom visuals.
  • Features that need a lot of native code: some device features still need native modules, and if most of the app lives there, native Kotlin or Swift may be cleaner.
  • No budget for upgrades: major framework versions take planned effort, so the app needs regular maintenance after launch.

Plain-English glossary

React Native terms, in plain English

Native module
A small piece of Android or iOS code that gives a React Native app access to a device feature, such as a Bluetooth printer. It adds effort, so we check early which features need one.
Expo
A set of tools and services around React Native that handles builds, app store submissions and updates. It saves setup time and makes releases more predictable.
Over-the-air update
A way to send a small fix straight to users' phones without a full app store release. It suits urgent bugs; new features and native changes still go through store review.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are over-the-air updates, and do the app stores allow them?

They let us ship changes to an app's JavaScript bundle without a full store release, which helps with urgent fixes. Expo's update service handles delivery and rollback. Apple and Google permit this for fixes and minor changes that don't alter the app's purpose; new native code or major features still go through store review.

Is React Native slower than a native app?

For typical business apps, users won't notice a difference: lists, forms, navigation and maps perform well, especially with the New Architecture and the Hermes engine. Heavy real-time graphics, complex gesture-driven animation or intensive on-device processing may need native modules or libraries such as Reanimated. We profile on real mid-range Android phones rather than relying on emulators.

Can our web developers help maintain a React Native app?

Yes, that's one of its main advantages. Developers who know React and TypeScript pick up screens and business logic quickly, though they need some guidance on mobile navigation, native builds, permissions and store releases. We document those parts during the project and can pair with your developers on the first few releases after handover.
