From a phone line to a platform technicians use

Many home services businesses start with a phone number, a WhatsApp group of technicians and a spreadsheet. It works until bookings clash, a technician arrives without the right part, or nobody can say how much cash is sitting with the field team.

A home services app replaces that with structured jobs. Customers pick a service, add-ons and a slot. The system assigns a professional by skill, service area, rating and remaining capacity for the day, and the professional updates status from the doorstep. Where the price depends on what the technician finds, the app supports inspection visits and itemised quotes the customer approves before work begins.

Challenges

Where home services operations break down

  1. Prices that change after inspection

Itemised on-site quotes approved in the app avoid arguments at the door.

  2. Wrong technician for the job

Skill tags and brand expertise, such as split versus window AC, drive assignment, not proximity alone.

  3. Rework and warranty claims

Job history, before-and-after photos and free revisits booked against the original job.

  4. Cash with the field team

Cash collected on site is logged per job and reconciled against each professional's payouts.

How it works

How a home service booking reaches the right technician

From slot booking to payout, every job follows the same trackable path.

  1. Customer app or website

Step 1: Customer books a slot

They choose a service such as AC servicing, add-ons and an address, then pick a slot that still has technician capacity.

  2. Admin panel

    Step 2: Job is assigned

The system suggests a technician by skill, area, rating and remaining capacity; a dispatcher can override with one click.

  3. Professional app

    Step 3: Technician arrives

The job appears in the technician's route-ordered list; they navigate to the address and mark arrival with the customer's OTP.

  4. Professional app

    Step 4: On-site quote

If the price depends on inspection, the technician adds parts and labour, and the customer approves the itemised quote in the app.

  5. Customer app

Step 5: Work done and paid

Before-and-after photos are saved, the customer pays by UPI, card or cash, and a digital invoice is sent.

  6. Admin panel

Step 6: Rating, warranty and payout

The rating and warranty period are recorded against the job, and the technician's earnings are paid out after cash dues are adjusted.

Plain-English glossary

Home services terms, in plain English

Slot capacity
How many jobs of a given length your technicians can take in a time window. It stops the app selling more bookings than your team can actually reach.
Skill-based assignment
Matching a job to a technician with the right skill tags, such as split AC or RO repair, rather than simply the nearest person. Fewer wrong visits mean fewer repeat trips.
Inspection-based pricing
For jobs whose cost is only known on site, the booking starts with a visit charge and the technician raises an itemised quote in the app for the customer to approve.
Cash reconciliation
Matching cash collected by technicians against their jobs and deducting it from their payouts, so you always know how much money sits with the field team.
AMC (annual maintenance contract)
A prepaid plan for a set number of services a year. The app schedules the visits and reminds customers, which builds repeat revenue.

Cost drivers

Cost drivers for a home services platform

  1. Number of service categories

Each category brings its own catalogue, pricing and skills; one category is much lighter.

  2. Assignment logic

Dispatcher-led assignment is simple; automatic matching by skill, distance and capacity takes more design and testing.

  3. Quotes and spare parts

On-site quoting with a parts catalogue and technician stock adds screens across both apps.

  4. Plans and business accounts

Maintenance subscriptions and consolidated billing for housing societies or offices add their own rules.

Estimates are written from your scope, with the effort and assumptions behind each line item.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can our own technicians and third-party partners work on the same app?

Yes. Professionals are set up as employees or partners with different payout rules: employees have jobs tracked for performance and incentives, while partners earn per job after commission. Assignment can offer jobs to employees first and release them to partners when capacity runs out. Both use the same app, so customers get a consistent experience, and the admin panel reports on each group separately.

How does slot capacity work when jobs run longer than planned?

Each service carries an estimated duration plus a travel buffer, and each professional has a daily capacity. When a job overruns, the next booking is flagged as at risk on the dispatcher's board, and they can reassign it or warn the customer through WhatsApp. Actual job durations recorded in the app then help you correct the estimates over time.

Do customers have to install a home services app, or can they book on the website?

Many first-time customers find a home service through search and will not install an app for a one-off repair. We usually build a fast booking website on the same backend as the apps, so customers can book, pay and track without installing anything. The app then serves repeat customers, maintenance plan holders and anyone who wants saved addresses and quicker rebooking.

How are service professionals onboarded and verified?

Professionals sign up in the app, add identity and bank details, and can share documents through DigiLocker with their consent, which avoids handling raw Aadhaar copies. Background checks run through a verification vendor, skills are assessed by test or trial job, and an admin approves the profile before any job is offered. Expiring documents are tracked so lapsed profiles pause automatically.
