A marketplace that bills by the minute

Astrology platforms in India have moved from websites selling printed reports to apps where people talk to an astrologer within a minute. The product is the conversation: the user chooses from astrologers who are online, filtered by language, speciality and price, and pays for exactly the minutes they use.

That changes the engineering. Billing runs on the server while the session is live, the wallet must never go negative, a dropped call should not charge for the silence, and every minute has to be split correctly between the platform and the astrologer at payout time. Around that core sit the features that bring users back: a free kundli from their birth details, daily horoscopes, compatibility matching and follow-up sessions with the same astrologer.

Challenges

Where astrology platforms get into trouble

  1. Billing disputes

Server-side timers, per-second session logs and automatic refunds for dropped calls settle most complaints before they reach support.

  2. Astrologers taking users off the platform

Masked numbers, filters for phone numbers in chat and review of flagged sessions protect the marketplace.

  3. Supply at peak hours

Evening demand needs availability schedules, a waitlist and alerts that bring offline astrologers online.

  4. Sensitive personal data

Birth details and chat history are personal data, so consent, access controls and retention rules need designing in.

How it works

How a paid consultation runs from top-up to payout

Every session follows the same metered path, so the wallet, the astrologer’s earnings and the platform’s share always agree.

  1. User app

Step 1: User tops up the wallet

They add money by UPI or card. First-time users can get a free or discounted first session funded as a promotional credit.

  2. User app

Step 2: User picks an astrologer

The list shows who is online now, their languages, specialities, rating and per-minute price. The app checks the balance covers a minimum session before connecting.

  3. Astrologer app

    Step 3: Astrologer accepts

The request arrives with the user’s name, birth details and any past notes. If the astrologer is busy, the user can join a queue or pick someone else.

  4. Server

Step 4: Session is metered live

Chat, a masked phone call or video runs while the server deducts the wallet each minute. When the balance runs low, the user is prompted to top up before the session ends.

  5. User app

Step 5: Session ends and is reviewed

The user rates the session and can report a problem. Dropped calls are credited automatically; other complaints go to the support queue with the session log.

  6. Admin panel

Step 6: Astrologer is paid out

Earnings are totalled per payout cycle after the platform’s commission and refunds, and transferred to the astrologer’s bank account with a statement.

Plain-English glossary

Astrology app terms, in plain English

Per-minute billing
The user is charged for each minute of a session at the astrologer’s rate. The server, not the phone, keeps the clock, so the charge matches the session log even if the app is closed.
Closed-loop wallet
A prepaid balance that can only be spent on the platform’s own services. Wallets like this generally fall outside RBI’s licensing for prepaid payment instruments, but the exact design should be confirmed with your advisers.
Kundli (birth chart)
A chart of planet positions at the date, time and place of birth. The app calculates it from those three details, which is why accurate place and time-zone lookup matters.
Kundli milan
Compatibility matching between two birth charts, often used before marriage. The app generates the report; astrologers can then discuss it in a paid session.
Commission split
The share of each paid minute kept by the platform, with the rest going to the astrologer. It can differ by astrologer tier, session type or promotional minutes.

Cost drivers

Cost drivers for an astrology app

  1. Session types

Chat alone is lightest; masked calls, video and live sessions each add integrations and billing rules.

  2. Kundli and report features

Charts, compatibility and downloadable reports need calculation work and a licence decision for the ephemeris library.

  3. Languages

Each app language adds translation of screens, horoscope content and notifications.

  4. Store and remedies

Selling reports, puja bookings or products adds a catalogue, orders and fulfilment.

Estimates are written from your scope, with the effort and assumptions behind each line item.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does per-minute billing stay accurate if the app closes or the call drops?

The session clock runs on the server, not in the app. Each session records when both sides connected, every minute charged and when it ended, and the wallet is debited from that log. If a call drops, billing stops at the last connected second and the user can reconnect; short sessions that drop early can be credited automatically under rules you set. Support staff see the same log when a user complains.

Do we need an RBI licence for the in-app wallet?

Most astrology apps use a closed-loop wallet: money can only be spent on the platform’s own consultations and reports, cannot be transferred to other users and cannot be withdrawn as cash. RBI’s rules on prepaid payment instruments generally do not require authorisation for closed-loop wallets, while semi-closed wallets do. We design the wallet to stay closed-loop, but you should confirm the final design, refunds and GST treatment with your legal and tax advisers.

How are kundli charts calculated in the app?

The app takes date, time and place of birth, looks up the coordinates and historical time zone for that place, and calculates planet positions with an astronomical library such as Swiss Ephemeris, using the ayanamsa your astrologers prefer. Swiss Ephemeris is free under the AGPL licence, which has source-sharing obligations, or available under a paid commercial licence, so we settle the licence before development starts.

How do you stop astrologers moving users off the platform?

Phone calls go through masked numbers so neither side sees the other’s number. Chat messages are checked for phone numbers, UPI IDs and links, which are blocked or flagged for review, and users can report a session in one tap. Astrologers with repeated flags can be warned, paused or removed from the admin panel, and ratings and repeat-user numbers help you reward those who keep users on the platform.
