Who it's for

A local service marketplace works when trusted providers are available near every customer. We build both apps and the tools behind them: onboarding, verification, commissions and payouts.

Cost depends on
  • Number of categories
  • Payments model
  • Trust and safety tooling

Two sides, one neighbourhood at a time

Marketplaces for tutors, pet sitters, event vendors or home professionals face a cold start in every locality: customers leave if nobody is nearby, and providers leave if bookings do not come.

Technology controls the levers (where you open, how fast providers onboard, how search ranks them), and we make them adjustable from the admin panel.

Challenges

Marketplace problems we plan for

  1. Provider verification

eKYC via licensed providers or DigiLocker, plus background checks where needed.

  2. Disintermediation

Masked calls and platform-only benefits discourage swapped numbers.

  3. Money movement

Split settlements and payouts need reconciliation, not manual transfers.

  4. Tax records

Operators may have GST TCS and income-tax TDS obligations to report.

Core marketplace features

  • Geo search and ranking

Providers matched by distance, availability and rating.

  • Provider self-onboarding

Documents, service areas, rate cards and bank details.

  • Commission engine

Category-wise commissions, provider plans and promotions.

  • Reviews and disputes

    Verified-booking reviews, moderation and refunds.

  • Payouts

Scheduled bank settlements with provider statements.

How it works

How a booking works on a two-sided service marketplace

The platform sits between customer and provider at every step, which is what keeps bookings and payments on it.

  1. Provider app

Step 1: Provider signs up and is verified

A tutor or pet sitter uploads documents, sets service areas and rates, and completes eKYC. Your team approves them before they appear in search.

  2. Customer app

    Step 2: Customer searches nearby

Search ranks verified providers by distance, availability and rating for the chosen category and locality.

  3. Customer app

    Step 3: Booking and payment

The customer books a slot and pays through the platform, upfront or after the service depending on your model, so the money never changes hands off the app.

  4. Provider app

    Step 4: Service delivered

The provider starts and completes the booking in the app. Calls run through masked numbers, so contact details stay private.

  5. Customer app

    Step 5: Review or dispute

Only customers with a completed booking can leave a review. A complaint opens a dispute that your team settles with a full or partial refund.

  6. Admin panel

    Step 6: Commission and payout

The ledger deducts the category commission and pays providers on a fixed cycle, each payout with its own statement.

Plain-English glossary

Marketplace terms, in plain English

Cold start
The early phase in a new locality, with too few providers to attract customers and too few customers to keep providers. Opening one category and neighbourhood at a time lets both sides grow together.
Disintermediation
When a customer and provider meet through your app, then swap numbers and deal directly next time, so you lose the commission. Masked calls, platform-only warranties and loyalty benefits make staying on the platform the easier choice.
eKYC
Electronic 'know your customer' checks that confirm a provider's identity from Aadhaar or PAN through a licensed verification provider, in minutes rather than days. Faster onboarding means more verified supply in each locality.
Split settlement
A payment gateway feature that divides one customer payment between the provider and your platform automatically. Your commission never mixes with provider money, which keeps accounting and reconciliation simple.
TCS and TDS
Tax collected or deducted at source. Depending on your model, a marketplace operator may need to collect GST TCS or deduct income-tax TDS on provider earnings; the software keeps the records your CA needs to file returns.

Cost drivers

Costs specific to marketplaces

  1. Number of categories

Each category can bring its own booking flow, pricing and checks.

  2. Payments model

Pay-on-service is simpler than holds with split payouts.

  3. Trust and safety tooling

KYC, moderation queues and dispute handling scale with risk.

Estimates are written from your scope, with the effort and assumptions behind each line item.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do we verify providers on a service marketplace?

We integrate licensed verification providers for Aadhaar-based eKYC and PAN checks, and fetch documents such as driving licences through DigiLocker with the provider’s consent. Categories involving home visits or children may need police verification or background checks, tracked in the provider profile. Documents are stored encrypted, with limited access and only what verification needs.

How should commissions and provider payouts work?

Usually the platform collects the full amount, deducts commission and pays providers on a fixed cycle. Split-settlement products such as Razorpay Route or Cashfree’s split payments automate this, so funds settle through the gateway rather than your own account. A ledger records every booking, commission, refund and payout, so provider statements reconcile.

Can we launch with one category and add more later?

Yes, and it is usually the sensible route. Categories, their booking questions, pricing rules and verification requirements are configuration, so adding pet grooming after tutoring does not need a new app. Genuinely different flows, such as multi-day event bookings versus hourly services, may need new screens, which we estimate separately.
