Who it's for

We work with EdTech founders and product teams on the engineering behind learning products: video delivery with DRM, live classes, question banks with maths rendering, adaptive practice, subscriptions, and AI study help with guardrails. We build MVPs or join an existing product as an extension of your team.

Cost depends on
  • Content protection
  • Live versus recorded
  • AI features

Product engineering for learning companies

EdTech companies compete on the learning experience, but often stumble on engineering: video that buffers on a small-town 4G connection, live classes that fail during exam season, content piracy, and subscription billing that does not match how Indian families pay.

We build the platform so your team can focus on pedagogy and content. That covers content pipelines, assessment engines, adaptive practice, analytics, and AI features that help learners without pretending to be a teacher. It suits test-prep, K-12, language and skills products at MVP or growth stage.

Challenges

Engineering problems EdTech teams face

  1. Video on patchy networks

Learners in tier-2 and tier-3 towns need adaptive streaming and offline downloads that still respect DRM.

  2. Content piracy

Paid courses leak through screen recording and shared logins unless the app is designed against it.

  3. Assessment at scale

Mock tests with thousands of simultaneous submissions and instant rank lists stress weak backends.

  4. Retention after purchase

Learners stall after week one without nudges, streaks and meaningful progress signals.

EdTech capabilities we implement

  • Secure video delivery

HLS streaming with Widevine and FairPlay DRM, watermarking, offline downloads and device limits.

  • Live classes

Sessions through video APIs, with chat, polls, raise-hand and recordings published afterwards.

  • Question bank and test engine

LaTeX maths, multilingual questions, timed tests, negative marking and percentile reports.

  • Adaptive practice

Topic mastery tracking that picks the next question set from each learner's recent answers.

  • AI study help

Explanations grounded in your own content, with guardrails and teacher review of flagged answers.

How it works

How a learner moves through a test-prep app

  1. Learner app

Step 1: Learner picks a goal

The learner chooses an exam and a target date, and a short diagnostic test sets the starting level.

  2. Learner app

    Step 2: Subscribes and pays

The learner buys a monthly or yearly plan with UPI or a card, and renewals run on a mandate so access does not lapse mid-preparation.

  3. Video player

    Step 3: Watches protected lessons

Lessons stream at whatever quality the network allows, downloads stay encrypted, and a watermark discourages sharing.

  4. Practice engine

Step 4: Practises adaptive question sets

Each new set is picked from recent answers, so time goes to weak topics rather than questions the learner already gets right.

  5. AI assistant

Step 5: Asks the AI study helper

Explanations come from your own chapters, and any answer a learner flags goes to a teacher for review.

  6. Test engine

Step 6: Sits a mock test and sees a rank

Thousands of learners submit together and see percentile and topic-wise analysis within minutes.

  7. Admin dashboard

Step 7: Content team improves from the data

Drop-off points, weak topics and flagged answers show the academic team what to fix next.

Plain-English glossary

EdTech engineering terms, simplified

DRM
Digital rights management: encryption that lets a paid video play only inside your app on an authorised device. It makes casual screen recording and file sharing much harder, which protects course revenue.
Adaptive streaming (HLS)
Video cut into small pieces at several qualities, so the player switches smoothly as the network changes. Learners on patchy mobile data keep watching instead of waiting for buffering.
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)
The AI first looks up relevant passages in your notes and question banks, then answers from them. Explanations stay consistent with how your teachers teach instead of drawing on random internet text.
Evaluation set
A fixed list of questions with approved answers used to test the AI before and after every change. It shows whether the study helper is getting more accurate or less, before learners notice.

Learner screens and the content console

  • EdTech software learner app chat on a phone, with a question and a reply
Learner app. The study helper answers from your own chapters and points learners back to the lesson, and teachers review any answer a learner marks as wrong.
  • EdTech software learner app dashboard on a phone, with key figures and a chart
Learner app. After each mock, learners see their rank, percentile and the topics costing them marks, which gives them a reason to come back and practise.
  • EdTech software content console lessons that need attention table in a web browser, with 3 rows and status labels
Content console. The content team sees where learners give up and which AI answers were flagged, so fixes go where they help retention most.

Cost drivers

What moves an EdTech build's budget

  1. Content protection

DRM, watermarking and device binding add licence costs and engineering over plain streaming.

  2. Live versus recorded

Real-time classes add video infrastructure, moderation tools and scale testing.

  3. AI features

Retrieval over your content, evaluation sets and review workflows need data preparation and ongoing tuning.

Estimates are written from your scope, with the effort and assumptions behind each line item.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you stop learners from recording or sharing paid videos?

You can make it much harder, not impossible. DRM — Widevine on Android and Chrome, FairPlay on Apple devices — blocks casual screen recording on most devices and encrypts downloads so they only play inside your app. Dynamic watermarks with the learner's phone number discourage sharing, and device limits stop one login serving a group. Someone can still film a screen with another phone, so we pair these controls with monitoring for unusual account activity.

How do you build AI tutoring features responsibly?

We ground the assistant in your curated content using retrieval, so answers draw on your chapters rather than general internet text, and restrict it to learning topics. Maths and science responses are tested against an evaluation set built with your academic team before launch. Learners can flag wrong answers for teacher review, and interactions are logged for quality checks. For minors, we collect only necessary data and never use it for targeted advertising.

Can you take over development of our existing EdTech app?

Yes. We start with a short audit of architecture, tests, dependencies, cloud costs and known bugs, and share findings before committing to a roadmap. Then we either stabilise the codebase or plan a staged rewrite of the parts blocking growth. We need repository access, cloud credentials and ideally time with previous developers. Handover risks, such as undocumented integrations, are listed openly so you can plan around them.
