Where an online store wins or loses the order

Few orders are lost on the homepage. They drop off on a product page that loads slowly over mobile data, at a pincode check that fails after checkout begins, or at a UPI payment that times out and leaves the buyer unsure whether they paid.

In e-commerce website development we map the path from search result to delivered parcel and design those moments: delivery dates on the product page, the fewest checkout steps your payment rules allow, and order status confirmed by the gateway's webhook.

Challenges

What a rebuilt store should fix

  1. Slow pages on mobile data

Heavy themes and stacked plugins make product pages crawl on mid-range phones.

  2. COD parcels that come back

Unconfirmed COD orders to wrong addresses become return-to-origin shipments you pay for twice.

  3. Orders re-keyed by hand

Staff copy orders into billing and courier portals, so invoices lag and stock drifts.

  4. Filters that flood search engines

Faceted navigation spawns near-identical URLs that crawlers waste time on.

How it works

How a visitor becomes a delivered order on your store

Each step below is a place where stores commonly lose orders or staff time, so each gets deliberate design.

  1. Storefront

Step 1: Visitor lands from search or an ad

Server-rendered category and product pages load quickly on mobile data and are easy for search engines to read.

  2. Storefront and courier API

Step 2: Pincode check on the product page

Before checkout, the shopper sees whether you deliver to them, the expected date and whether COD is allowed.

  3. Payment gateway

Step 3: Checkout with the payment they prefer

UPI on phones, a QR code on desktop, cards, wallets or COD; the order is confirmed only when the gateway reports the payment.

  4. WhatsApp or IVR

Step 4: COD orders are confirmed

Cash orders get a quick confirmation message before shipping, which filters out fake and impulse orders that would come back.

  5. Admin dashboard

Step 5: Invoice and label without re-keying

A GST invoice is generated and a courier label booked from the order itself, and stock updates automatically.

  6. Courier and customer

Step 6: Tracking, delivery and returns

Tracking events update the order; failed attempts raise NDR tasks, and approved returns create credit notes.

Plain-English glossary

Online store terms, in plain English

Server-side rendering
The server prepares each page’s full HTML before sending it, instead of the phone assembling it with scripts. Product pages appear sooner on mid-range phones, and search engines can read every product.
Structured data
Labels in the page code that tell search engines a page is a product, with its price and availability. It can make listings eligible for richer search results, though the search engine decides whether to show them.
Faceted navigation
The filters on a category page, such as size, colour and price. Each combination can create a new URL, so we control which ones search engines may index and avoid thousands of near-duplicate pages.
301 redirect
A permanent “this page has moved” instruction pointing an old URL at its new address. During a rebuild, redirects carry existing search rankings across and stop old links landing on an error page.
Pincode serviceability
A check, usually against your courier’s data, of whether you deliver to a pincode, by when and whether COD is allowed. Showing it on the product page avoids disappointment at checkout.

What shoppers and your store team see

Illustrative screens, using a footwear store as the example.

  • E-commerce website online store catalogue on a phone, showing men’s running shoes with prices
Online store. Category pages load fast on mobile and let shoppers filter by size, colour and price without creating URLs that confuse search engines.
  • E-commerce website online store checkout on a phone, with UPI, debit or credit card and netbanking options
Online store. Checkout repeats the delivery date, offers UPI, cards and COD within your rules, and shows success only after the gateway confirms payment.
  • E-commerce website admin dashboard delivery exceptions table in a web browser, with 4 rows and status labels
Admin dashboard. Failed deliveries and return requests land in one queue with the courier’s reason, so staff can call, reschedule or approve a return the same day.
  • E-commerce website admin dashboard import price changes in a web browser, with input fields and an action button
Admin dashboard. Your team updates prices, stock and new products by spreadsheet; the import checks every row and lists errors before anything goes live.

Cost drivers

What moves the estimate for an online store

  1. Hosted or custom

A tailored theme needs less engineering; a custom build needs more but removes recurring app fees.

  2. Catalogue shape

Variants, bundles and made-to-order items add data modelling and admin screens.

  3. Integrations

Each payment, courier, accounting or ERP link adds build and test effort.

  4. Design depth

Adapting a theme costs less than a custom design system with bespoke templates.

  5. Migration

Moving products, customers, orders and old URLs with 301 redirects needs careful mapping.

Estimates are written from your scope, with the effort and assumptions behind each line item.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should we use Shopify or WooCommerce, or build a custom store?

If you sell a standard retail catalogue and want to launch quickly, a hosted platform such as Shopify, or WooCommerce on WordPress, is often the sensible start, and we can design and extend it. A custom build pays off when pricing, checkout or catalogue rules keep fighting the platform, app fees stack up, or the store has to share a backend with mobile apps or a B2B portal.

How can an online store reduce COD returns?

Software cannot remove return-to-origin shipments entirely, but it can cut the avoidable ones. Typical measures: a WhatsApp or IVR confirmation before COD orders ship, COD switched off for pincodes or order values you choose, a map pin to validate addresses, a prepaid discount, and flags on phone numbers with repeated refusals. Courier NDR data then feeds back into those rules.

Can the store generate GST invoices automatically?

Yes. Tax invoices can be generated on dispatch with HSN codes, your GSTIN and the right CGST and SGST or IGST split for the place of supply, with credit notes raised when returns are processed. For B2B orders where e-invoicing applies to your turnover, invoices can be registered with the Invoice Registration Portal through a GST Suvidha Provider. Your accountant should confirm rates and treatment.

How long does e-commerce website development typically take?

A store on a hosted platform with a customised theme and standard integrations typically takes a few weeks. A custom store with its own backend, admin and several integrations typically takes a few months, depending on catalogue complexity and how quickly content and approvals arrive. When migrating an existing store, redirects and SEO checks run as a separate workstream.
