Who it's for

Social products live or die on engagement and trust. We build community, creator and private group apps with feeds, chat, moderation and grievance workflows.

Cost depends on
  • Real-time features
  • Moderation depth
  • Media volume

Social products are moderation products too

Profiles, feeds and chat are easy to demo. What matters sits behind them: feed ranking, real-time messaging on patchy networks, uploads from low-end phones and abuse reports handled before they escalate.

Indian platforms also answer to the IT Rules, 2021 on grievances and the DPDP Act on consent, including verifiable parental consent for under-18s.

Challenges

Hard parts of running a social platform

  1. Moderation at scale

Classifiers flag; trained human reviewers decide.

  2. Real-time at sane cost

Chat and presence need WebSocket infrastructure that scales economically.

  3. Media on weak networks

Resumable uploads and on-device compression for patchy 4G.

  4. Grievance workflows

Complaint tracking, grievance contacts and takedown timelines.

Social features we build

  • Profiles and connections

Follows, groups, blocks and privacy settings.

  • Feeds

Chronological and ranked feeds with caching.

  • Messaging

One-to-one and group chat with media and push.

  • Moderation console

Report queues, appeals and an audit trail.

  • Creator monetisation

Tips and paid groups via UPI.

How it works

How a post is shared, seen and moderated

Moderation runs alongside every step, not only after complaints pile up.

  1. Member app

Step 1: Member posts a photo

A member shares photos in a group. The app compresses them on the phone and uploads in pieces, so a weak 4G signal does not lose the post.

  2. Moderation service

    Step 2: Automatic checks run

Filters and classifiers scan the text, links and images. Clear violations are held back; borderline items are flagged for a person to look at.

  3. Feed service

    Step 3: Feeds deliver it

The post appears in followers' and group members' feeds, ranked or in time order, and push notifications reach members who opted in.

  4. Member app

Step 4: A member reports it

Anyone can report a post, comment or message; the report arrives in the review queue with the content and its context.

  5. Moderation console

    Step 5: A moderator decides

A trained reviewer removes, restricts or keeps the content. Every action is logged with a reason, and the person who posted it can appeal.

  6. Grievance officer

Step 6: Grievance closed on record

Complaints under the IT Rules are tracked against their response timelines, leaving an audit trail if a regulator or court asks for one.

Plain-English glossary

Community platform terms, in plain English

WebSocket
A connection that stays open between the app and the server, so new messages and 'typing…' indicators arrive instantly rather than the app checking every few seconds. It makes chat feel live, and must be designed to scale economically.
Content classifier
A machine-learning model that scores posts, images or messages for likely problems such as spam, nudity or hate speech. It flags content for review; trained people make the final call, because classifiers make mistakes.
Resumable upload
An upload that carries on from where it stopped when the network drops, instead of starting again. On patchy mobile data it is the difference between a posted video and a frustrated member.
Verifiable parental consent
Under India's DPDP Act, a platform needs a parent's or guardian's verified permission before processing the data of anyone under 18. Sign-up needs an age check and a consent step you can prove later.
Grievance mechanism
The published complaints process the IT Rules, 2021 expect platforms to run, with a named contact and response timelines. Tracking each complaint in software shows those timelines were met.

The member app and the moderation console

  • Social platform software member app group on a phone, with 4 entries
Member app. Members follow groups, share photos and vote in polls in a feed that loads quickly on budget phones and weak connections.
  • Social platform software member app chat on a phone, with a question and a reply
Member app. One-to-one and group chat with photos, locations and push alerts, on real-time servers that keep messages in order on patchy networks.
  • Social platform software moderation console review queue table in a web browser, with 5 rows and status labels
Moderation console. Moderators work through one queue of reports, classifier flags, grievances and appeals, each showing its age, so the oldest and riskiest items come first.

Cost drivers

Social app cost drivers

  1. Real-time features

Chat, live audio or video and presence add infrastructure and testing.

  2. Moderation depth

AI classifiers plus reviewer tooling cost more than keyword filters.

  3. Media volume

Video uploads need transcoding, storage and CDN delivery.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you moderate user content on a social app?

In layers. Automated checks (keyword and link filters, image and text classifiers) flag or hold likely violations. Flagged items and user reports reach a review queue where trained moderators decide, with actions logged and an appeal route. No automated system is error-free, so thresholds and response times are agreed with you before launch.

What does the DPDP Act mean for a social app with teenage users?

The DPDP Act 2023 treats anyone under 18 as a child, requires verifiable parental consent before processing their data, and restricts tracking, behavioural monitoring and targeted ads aimed at children. In practice: age gating, a parental consent flow and behavioural ads off for minors. Your legal adviser should confirm the design against the rules under the Act.

Which technology do you use for real-time chat?

Typically Node.js or NestJS with WebSockets, Redis for presence and pub/sub, PostgreSQL or MongoDB for message history, and Firebase Cloud Messaging and APNs for push notifications. A managed chat SDK can be quicker for an early version; we compare its per-user pricing with a custom build before recommending either.
