Who it's for

Electronics production depends on thousands of small components, strict traceability and test data for every unit. We build software that tracks it from receiving to returns.

Cost depends on
  • Station integrations
  • Traceability depth
  • Customer reporting

Traceability down to the component reel

EMS providers and electronics brands assemble boards from thousands of parts, often from several approved vendors, and every finished unit carries a serial number that customers and warranty teams will ask about later. Moisture-sensitive components have limited floor life once opened, and test stations generate data that must link to each unit. Generic ERPs rarely go this deep, so we build traceability, test and returns software that sits beside your ERP.

Challenges

Common gaps in electronics production

  1. Reel and lot tracking

Components issued without scans, so a supplier defect can't be traced to affected units.

  2. MSL floor life

Moisture-sensitive parts exceed exposure limits because open time is tracked on paper.

  3. Test data in silos

Station results stored locally and never linked to serial numbers.

  4. Blind warranty returns

RMAs handled without failure history, so recurring faults go unnoticed.

Electronics-specific features

  • Component receiving

Reel IDs, date codes and lot numbers captured at goods receipt with barcode labels.

  • MSL exposure tracking

Open-time timers per reel, alerts before limits, and baking records.

  • Serial number genealogy

Each unit linked to board lots, sub-assemblies, firmware version and operator.

  • Test data capture

Pass/fail results and measurements imported from test stations per serial.

  • RMA workflow

Returns logged by serial, failure analysis, repair decisions and trend reports.

How it works

How one unit is traced from component reel to customer return

  1. Stores team

Step 1: Reels received and labelled

Reel IDs, date codes and lot numbers are captured at goods receipt, and every reel gets a barcode label before it goes on the shelf.

  2. Line operator

Step 2: Reels loaded on the SMT line

Each reel is scanned as it is loaded on the placement machine, and moisture-sensitive parts start an open-time countdown.

  3. Assembly line

Step 3: Board built and serialised

Each board or unit receives a serial number linked to the component lots, firmware version and operator that went into it.

  4. Test station

Step 4: Tested at the station

Pass or fail results and measurements are collected from the station’s output files and stored against the serial number.

  5. Dispatch

    Step 5: Packed and shipped

Shipment records list the serials in every carton, so traceability reports are ready when an OEM customer asks.

  6. RMA desk

    Step 6: Return analysed

A returned unit is looked up by serial with its full build and test history, and the failure analysis feeds supplier and process trend reports.

Plain-English glossary

Electronics production terms, explained

EMS provider
An electronics manufacturing services company that assembles boards and products for other brands. Its customers expect detailed traceability records with every shipment.
SMT (surface-mount technology)
The automated process that places tiny components onto circuit boards at high speed. Its machines produce logs that can link each board to the exact reels it used.
MSL (moisture sensitivity level)
A rating of how long a component can stay out of its dry packaging before it absorbs too much moisture to solder safely. Tracking open time per reel prevents defects that appear only later.
Serial genealogy
The family tree of one finished unit: which component lots, sub-assemblies, firmware and operator went into it. It turns a supplier defect into a precise list of affected units.
RMA (return material authorisation)
The process and reference number for a customer sending back a faulty unit. Linking each RMA to the unit’s build history reveals faults that keep recurring.

Illustrative screens with sample reel, lot and serial numbers.

  • Electronics manufacturing software line-side terminal MSL floor life, line 1 on a tablet, with 4 entries
Line-side terminal. Operators see which moisture-sensitive reels are close to their limit, so parts are baked or quarantined before they reach a board.
  • Electronics manufacturing software serial genealogy lookup serial SN-24A1187 table in a web browser
Serial genealogy lookup. Quality teams trace any serial to its component lots, firmware and test results, and find every other unit that used a suspect lot.
  • Electronics manufacturing software RMA dashboard in a web browser, with key figures and a chart
RMA dashboard. Return trends show which failures repeat and which supplier lots they trace to, so fixes target the cause rather than each unit.

Cost drivers

Cost considerations for electronics software

  1. Station integrations

Each test station, placement machine or AOI system exports data differently.

  2. Traceability depth

Unit-level genealogy with component lots costs more than batch-level tracking.

  3. Customer reporting

OEM customers may require specific traceability reports or formats.

Estimates are written from your scope, with the effort and assumptions behind each line item.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you import data from our SMT and test equipment?

Usually. Many machines write log files, CSV exports or database records, and some support factory communication standards. We build small collectors that read these outputs, match them to serial or panel IDs and send them to a central database. Where equipment is locked down, we work from scheduled exports. We review sample files from each machine before estimating, since formats vary between vendors.

Can this help with BIS or customer compliance documentation?

It makes the records easier to produce. The software can store certificates, test reports and approved-vendor details against each product and model, and generate traceability reports per shipment. It doesn't replace certification itself: BIS registration under the Compulsory Registration Scheme, for example, involves testing at BIS-recognised labs and an application your compliance team manages.

Will operators have to scan every reel?

Scanning at key points (receiving, issue to the line, reel changes on the machine and final assembly) is what makes traceability work, so some scanning is unavoidable. We keep it quick with handheld or fixed scanners, pre-printed labels and screens that only ask for what is missing. The effort pays off the first time you need to find which units used a suspect lot.
