What Stripe is, and when it belongs in your payment stack
Stripe is a payment service that lets your website or app accept card payments and run subscriptions for customers around the world. It handles currencies, card security checks, renewals and invoices. For you, that means you can sell to overseas buyers and bill them monthly without building payment logic yourself.
Stripe's APIs and documentation are thorough, and it handles international cards, many currencies and subscription logic cleanly. That makes it a common choice for SaaS companies and exporters selling abroad, including Indian founders with an overseas entity.

When we would not recommend Stripe
- Customers who pay in India: domestic payment methods such as UPI and RuPay are better served by Indian gateways such as Razorpay.
- If your business is not eligible: Stripe's eligibility and onboarding for India have changed over time, so we confirm eligibility with Stripe before designing around it.
- One market only: running two gateways adds complexity, so we recommend it only when you genuinely serve both Indian and overseas customers.
Plain-English glossary
Subscription billing terms, in plain English
- Dunning
- Automatic follow-up when a subscription payment fails: retrying the card and emailing the customer. It recovers renewals that would otherwise be lost.
- Proration
- Charging the right part-month amount when a customer upgrades or downgrades mid-cycle, so bills are fair and nobody has to calculate them by hand.
- Webhook
- A notice Stripe sends to your server when a payment succeeds, fails or is refunded. We treat these notices, not the customer's browser, as the source of truth for payment status.
- 3-D Secure
- An extra check, such as an OTP or a bank app approval, that confirms the card holder is paying. It reduces fraud and is expected by many card issuers.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can an Indian company use Stripe?
Some can, but it depends on your business type and Stripe's current onboarding policy for India, which has changed over time. Companies with an overseas entity, for example in the US, commonly use Stripe through that entity. We check eligibility early and, if Stripe isn't available to you, design with an Indian gateway that supports international cards instead.
How do you handle Stripe webhooks reliably?
Every webhook is verified with its signature, stored and processed idempotently, so a retried event never creates a duplicate subscription or refund. We treat webhooks, not browser redirects, as the source of truth for payment status, process them through a queue and reconcile regularly against Stripe's records. Failed events raise alerts for the team to review.
Can one product accept both Stripe and Razorpay payments?
Yes, and it's a common setup. We build a payment layer in the back end that selects the gateway by customer country, currency or payment method, and stores transactions in one consistent format. Reports, refunds and invoices then work the same way whichever gateway was used. It adds some complexity, so we recommend it only when you genuinely serve both markets.
